Thank you, Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, for sharing how Rob inspired the U.S. Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act.
January 31 marks the sixth anniversary of Rob's passing, but his legacy continues to live through many passionate and dedicated people worldwide.
"Rob Stewart was a dedicated ocean conservationist and instrumental in exposing the illegal and destructive shark fin industry.
In 2011, Rob was invited by local elementary school students to visit the Marianas and help protect sharks. Together, they successfully lobbied the Commonwealth government to enact legislation to ban the sale, trade, and possession of shark fins, making the Marianas the first U.S. territory to adopt a shark fin ban.
This December, my bill modeled after the Marianas law that Rob helped inspire was finally passed by Congress and signed by President Biden. It makes the buying and selling of shark fins illegal throughout the entire United States.
Thanks to Rob’s passion and advocacy and the concern of those young students in the Marianas, our country is now removed from the global shark fin trade."
Thank you Congressman Sablan for sponsoring the U.S. Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act and for all of your dedication to protecting sharks.
